A very senior professional in their field sent me their CV the other day for a position we are recruiting for. I actually had gone out to look for him because I have seen his work before, so when the vacancy showed up I knew he was just the guy for it. I was however shocked that after skimming through his CV twice, I couldn’t find anything about his capability to undertake the role at hand. If I hadn’t known the guy I would simply have discarded the CV without a second look. So I called him to let him know that critical aspects of his experience and skillset s weren’t explicit in his CV-and that would be OK with me because I knew him- but my client, and even any other employer would automatically drop him for lack of the right qualifications for the job.  He thought he had a pretty good CV, beautifully formatted CV, well worded and lengthy (11 pages long), so he couldn’t understand what I was talking about. And the length was important to show just how experienced he is. Plus, he says no one ever complained about his CV before. But you see that is just the thing about recruiters. I’m sure they would love to give feedback to each and every candidate they drop at the shortlisting stage, but you know what, it is sometimes inhumanly impossible to put aside the work that actually gets you paid and go about giving personal feedback to 900 applicants who didn’t make the cut. Well, most of the time you don’t know the reasons why a CV didn’t make the cut even as a recruiter- you don’t know if the candidate just doesn’t have the skillset or they just didn’t put them on the CV, or they actually put them in the CV among a thousand other unnecessary words and now you can’t find them, like is the case here with this candidate.

As the saying goes, most of us in job hunting (as in other areas) are too busy chopping wood to sharpen the axe. We send out thousands of applications for jobs with the wrong CV, the wrong presentation of you, and the only thing we achieve by this is driving the recruiter on the other side crazy with shortlisting work. If the recruiter, in this case, is an SME- probably without an internal HR- the owner honestly may have to drop the entire recruitment and go saying that there “are no employable graduates”- which happens to be a popular quote among employers these days.

So how do you begin the journey of sharpening your axe for job search? The only thing is you have to learn to pick what’s relevant and applicable and what’s not. And you have a bit more work on your hands than someone working with a coach who is already experienced in diverse areas of the job marketplace spectrum.
